Mission Statement:
To write accurate, fair, substantive, and engaging reports on economic policy and related news, with a preference for under-covered developments and issues related to poverty.
Disclosures:
Financial:
-- Washington Examiner: I anticipate that my employment at the Examiner will be my sole source of income in 2020.
The Examiner and its parent company, MediaDC, are owned by Clarity Media Group, which in turn is owned by Philip Anschutz. The Examiner receives revenue from corporate advertisements. Beyond that, I have little knowledge of the Examiner’s business operations.
-- Investments: I do not have any investments besides index funds. I have no knowledge of any individual stocks that may be in the funds, which are mostly in retirement accounts. One is an account with Wealthfront. I own a nominal amount of cryptocurrency.
-- I do not have, as far as I know, any relationships with people in politics or business that could present a conflict of interest.
-- I regularly attend nonpublic dinners, lunches, and happy hours hosted for journalists by companies, trade associations, think tanks, publications, and other groups. In my opinion, such events are important for journalists to do their job properly and do not prevent conflicts of interest. I go to too many events with free food or drinks to disclose all of them, but would try to disclose ones relevant to specific stories at any reader’s request. If I meet with a source one-on-one, as opposed to with other journalists, I pay for dinner or drinks, or at least for my share.
Political:
-- I am not a member of any political party and I don't contribute to any politicians.
-- My personal politics are generally right of center. I mention this because, while I strive to keep my personal views out of my reporting, I acknowledge that reporters are limited in their ability to see any given issue with objectivity. Accordingly, I aim for transparency in addition to impartiality.
Background information:
Previously, I worked at RealClearPolicy and the American Spectator. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in economics.
I grew up in Massachusetts, and am of Irish and Egyptian descent.
I am Roman Catholic. I love playing sports and playing the guitar. I’m a fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox, the and the Providence College Friars.
I invite all comments, criticism, hate mail, jokes, restaurant suggestions, Dan Brown-style encrypted adventure clues, and donations and/or bequests: [email protected]
